Balance a service on the local network

Let devices in the same place use a service straight over the local network, with one machine balancing its instances.

Open Clusters

Before you start

Steps

  1. Open the service under Workloads and find Local network.
  2. Click Balance on the local network. Clusters picks the machine of the island with the most processors that is not a phone; choose another under Balancer if you prefer.
  3. Clusters sends the balancer to that machine, checks how it reaches each instance (the local network first, the instance's tunnel when that does not answer) and starts it.
  4. Use the Local address it shows from any device on that network. Each request goes to a healthy instance; one that stops answering is left out within seconds.
  5. Click Stop the local balancer to end it. The service's ocalt.site address is not affected either way.

What happens next

Visitors on the internet still reach the service at its ocalt.site address. The local address works only on the island's own network.

Good to know

  • Machines on a network that blocks devices from reaching each other (some guest Wi-Fi does) are reached through their tunnels instead, and the panel says so.
